How to Find Motivation

March 5, 2020

I haven’t been on my blog since I started it, and that honestly felt a little bit like a failure to me. I was so excited to start blogging, there was a huge list of topics waiting for me to write about. But my blog remained untouched for over 5 months.

I ended up starting a new job right after I started my blog, and got comfortable quickly; I wanted (and still want of course!) to give my new job my full attention and effort, but at the same time I sacrificed a part of myself that is never worth sacrificing: my creative outlet. As people, it’s obvious that we can only focus on one thing at a time. But I realized yesterday that there’s a difference between focusing on only one thing at a time, and focusing on one thing all the time.

It’s always been a dream of mine to become an entrepreneur, but I have always been too afraid because I didn’t know where to start. I never thought of myself as someone afraid of failure, especially because when I do fail I’m not the type to get discouraged. I’m also the hard-working type, and I don’t shy away from hard work nor do I get overwhelmed when there’s a lot on my plate. But last night, I hit a breaking point when I realized that I’ve been focusing on one thing all the time, and that’s my new job.

Since starting this blog, I’ve wanted it to be a focus of mine and considered it a great step towards starting a company, but somehow my one focus kept taking up all of my attention. Last night I was sitting on the couch with my boyfriend and I just looked back in my mind at the last several months and thought “Where has the time gone? Why haven’t I been working on my blog?”

I realized it was because I’ve been scared to give my ideas my full effort when I don’t know exactly what it is I’m doing or how to do it, and I know this is a feeling shared by many. I’ve had several glimpses of moments in life where I decide to just get started on whatever it is I want to do and all the details will be ironed out along the way, but those moments are few and far between, and they definitely don’t stick around long enough for me to get anything of substance done.

In the past few months, I’ve researched about motivation, and the biggest thing I’ve learned even though it’s so simple when you think about it is that motivation is fleeting. We can’t rely on motivation to accomplish what we want in life. So how can we accomplish what we want if 1. we don’t know how to do it exactly and 2. we don’t “feel” like it “right now?”

My boyfriend helped me with this dilemma and made it so easy and clear, and his advice helped give me the energy I needed to be able to write this post that I’m sharing with you (and motivation wasn’t even part of the equation).

I made a list of my goals for the week. I didn’t start with some crazy list of all my life goals, my 2020 goals or anything like that. Just a list of my goals for this week. Also, who cares that it’s already Thursday? Making that list of goals showed me that you don’t have to wait for anything to start accomplishing what you want. Having this list of goals put my week in perspective, it made me understand that I’m working towards something for myself, not for anyone else or a job, etc. And that was all the feeling that I needed to pick myself up and keep moving forward.

My goals for this week are to write 1 blog post, come up with 3 business ideas, and work out at least once. By making this blog post right now, I’ve already checked something off and it feels really empowering. If you feel that never-ending rollercoaster of “I can and will do it all!” and “I’m just going to do what I can to get by,” try making a weekly list of goals. Maybe it will evolve into a monthly and yearly list, and maybe you’ll have separate ones for weekly, monthly, and yearly – the list of available options (no pun intended) is endless. I know it’s working for me, and I love being able to share these things with you.

How do you find motivation, and what does it mean to you? I’d love to know in the comments. Until next time, xo.

An Honest Review of Drunk Elephant’s “Cocomino Glossing Shampoo” and “Cocomino Marula Cream Conditioner”

May 21, 2020
We’ll take a look at this shampoo and conditioner duo that claims to “add smoothness and shine.”

I received a free sample of Drunk Elephant’s shampoo and conditioner when I ordered some other products through Sephora. I’d never used the brand before, but have heard many beauty influencers praise them… so you know when I had the opportunity to get a free sample, I jumped right on that!

Typically, Drunk Elephant’s shampoo and conditioner cost $25 each, which for someone like me who doesn’t mind splurging on the $40+ bottles at the hair salon, I thought that if I loved this stuff I wouldn’t mind the price tag at all. Plus, can we just admire how chic the bottles are? I love the pops of color on their bottles; everything from neon pink to baby blue hues grace the caps of the bottles and packaging of the product is always the most important factor to me right after quality.

Drunk Elephant Shampoo

According to Drunk Elephant’s website, their shampoo is supposed to produce “a gentle, creamy foam” and contains at least 3 kinds of oils, including argan and almond oils. It’s also supposed to be focused on the scalp and can “dissolve years of buildup.” The result? Your hair should be bouncy and voluminous.

As for the conditioner, Drunk Elephant lists a plethora of oils in this one as well as marula butter. Marula butter is an ingredient that’s meant to help with softness and moisture – two essential outcomes of a quality hair product. Finally, the company specifically recommends that the conditioner be combed from root to tip and left to rest so that it can fully soak in. Rest assured, I followed that instruction closely.

Drunk Elephant Conditioner

When I received the products, I was more than pleased with their appearance. The matte feeling of the bottles along with the fact that there are anywhere from 2-6 uses that someone can get out of here depending on your hair length had me excited to test these out ASAP!

Both the shampoo and the conditioner are scentless, which as a personal preference is not my ideal. I love that feeling of smelling my freshly-cleaned hair with a hint of something feminine. Of course, that doesn’t have anything to do with the performance and I just wanted to note that for anyone who also prefers their hair care to have a scent.

Getting to performance, I was left very underwhelmed. Drunk Elephant’s shampoo page mentions that there may not be enough suds and to just rewet and lather again; unfortunately, I ended up using more than my hair usually needs just to get a few bubbles out. With the conditioner, I left it in my hair the recommended minute and then some. Usually after washing out conditioner, my hair immediately feels softer – this didn’t accomplish that. I figured after using the products I would wait to see how they did with the promised shine and bounciness, but again, my hair wasn’t any shinier or bouncier than before. Not to mention, I’m someone who has drier, curlier hair with buildup on my scalp and these products did not clear the buildup. In fact, I felt I had more buildup than usual.

To their credit, these products do feel light and aren’t harsh at all; so many shampoos and conditioners with sulfates and more in them can burn when you give your scalp a nice scrub. These products didn’t do that, I felt I could scrub scrub scrub and there was no irritation.

Final Recommendation

Overall, would I recommend purchasing this product? If you’re someone who doesn’t require much hair maintenance, this shampoo will probably work great for you. It’s light and gets the job done. But if your hair needs the red carpet rolled out with extra attention, I would move on to the next and give it a try only if you can get a free sample, too.

I do plan on trying other Drunk Elephant products and will update on those as these beauty reviews continue. I’m curious to hear your experience with this shampoo and conditioner and any other Drunk Elephant products, leave a comment below and let me know!

As always, thanks for reading, until next time xo.

How I started this blog with easy-to-follow steps for us non-technical people

I just started a blog today. It seems weird to say that since people think of blogging as so 10 years ago, and now the latest thing is to be on YouTube. Don’t get me wrong… YouTube is a huge part of my life, I have so many people on there who inspire me (which will be in a post at a later time). To me, there’s something about pulling up Google on my phone or my laptop and reading an article that still makes me feel like I’m learning something.

So here I was, last week, with the rain slowly pattering down outside, when I thought “I’m going to start a blog.” I’m not a technical person by any means when it comes to websites, coding, all that. But that’s when I came across the first — and I mean first — helpful article about starting a blog that I have found. I stumbled across this blog called Pickled Plum where the author has a post titled “How To Start A WordPress Blog on Bluehost.”

I was wondering what the heck is Bluehost? And I was thinking about how WordPress is supposed to be easy to use, I just have never used it for my own personal website before. So I read this article, and the author explained everything. A question popped up in my head, and it was answered by the next sentence of the article.

If you’re considering starting a blog, please read this article. Here are just a few reasons why I find it so helpful:

  • A clear explanation as to why you should pay for your blog instead of making a free site if you want to make money with your blog
  • Why a hosting company (Bluehost) is important and what they can offer you — plus she even has a special offer for her readers!
  • Shows you step-by-step what she did to get her blog up and running

Not to mention, she talks about helpful tips once you’re on WordPress, so it’s clear that the author wants to provide a real-life way to not just start a blog but optimize it how you like, too, and she showed me that it doesn’t have to be that hard. I won’t reiterate what the author already laid out perfectly, all I wanted was to spread this information around since I have found it extremely helpful! If you’re thinking of starting a blog, start with the Pickled Plum article.

Let me know what you think in the comments and your insights on starting/running a blog! Until next time xo
